Over the years many have sought to redress the distortions caused by representing the world as a purely navigational tool. In simple layman’s terms, methods were used to adjust the lines of longitude and latitude so that world map better represented the true size of countries. perhaps the most dramatic example of this is an 'equal area map'. This projection expands the lines of latitude at the equator and compresses them at the poles. The result is that one achieves greater integrity of size at the expense of a loss of integrity of shape. The best example of an equal area projection map is that advanced by the late Arno Peters.
